Day of the Dead - Don Julio Tequila
illustrated by Steve Simpson for Catapult Dublin
If you've seen anything of my portfolio you will know I enjoy working on projects related to Día de los Muertos, even better, I absolutely love working on Día de los Muertos with Mexican brands. The brief was both simple and complex. To create a promotional poster in the style of papel picado that encompassed the Don Julio brand for a Day of the Dead event. The tricky bit was to create something that could easily be broken apart and used as assets for various campaign elements, a text holder for the menus, window clings, mini graphics, single colour screen print etc. All said, I really enjoyed the challenge of this project and was delighted with ultimate outcome - many thanks to Bren Byrne at Catapult for the Creative Direction.

Final rough Sketch
My final papel picado inspired design features the usual day of the dead calaveras, musical instrument, musical notes, flowers and candles. Representing the brand, I've included the iconic bottle shape sitting in front of an agave, a slice of lime, Don Julio hat and logo
Final Artwork for Print
Detail of Hand lettering
Above is the print version, it differs from the flat, reversed out screen print version as it contains added texture and depth.
